1–2 June: Cycling through UNESCO sites from Valsesia to Monferrato
A cycle route connecting UNESCO sites via slow-paced routes, so that they can be viewed as part of an integrated system with a focus on sustainability: organised by the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano (Department of Architecture and Urban Studies) and the E-scapes Observatory.
The group of cyclists will set off from Vercelli railway station, cycling upstream along the River Sesia to Varallo and passing through the Sesia Val Grande Geopark. Over the following days, the cyclists will cross the Po plain and its rice fields, reaching the MAB reserve areas in the Turin hills and Monferrato.
The event forms part of the Sustainable Development Festival’s programme of initiatives and offers an opportunity to visit the sites and gain a deeper understanding of their connection to the local areas and communities, as well as their contribution to achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
Along this educational cycle route, students and teachers will meet with officials and managers of UNESCO sites to discuss the promotion of slow and sustainable cultural tourism, for which this initiative aims to serve as a model to be replicated in collaboration with regional authorities.
