Teaching and education
Understanding our geological heritage in order to protect and promote it
The educational programme is aimed at schools, universities, groups and teachers.
The Geopark is a setting of great scientific and scenic value, ideal for exploring geological, environmental and historical-cultural topics. The activities on offer – guided excursions, workshops and interdisciplinary programmes – are designed for educational purposes and are aligned with the school curriculum.
The aim is to promote an understanding of natural processes, knowledge of the local area and the development of scientifically grounded environmental awareness.
Educational activities
Schools
The Geopark, through experts in the field, organises, leads and manages educational excursions for schools, comprising full-day programmes with both classroom and field activities. The days are led by experts in geology, geomorphology and natural sciences, and the activities are accompanied by hiking guides or AMMs accredited by the Piedmont Region. The activities are explained and described to teaching staff using materials sent in advance by email.
Universities
The Geopark collaborates with departments and research groups at various universities to organise field trips and fieldwork activities. The Geopark’s territory is, in fact, a veritable open-air laboratory, where participants can experiment with and gain first-hand insight into petrography, structural geology, geomorphology and climatology, as well as topics related to archaeology and palaeontology, thanks to sites of scientific significance within the area.

Environmental education activities
Thanks to the presence of geological laboratories, visitor centres and geological trails, environmental education activities are organised within the Geopark for both schools and the general public. These focus on the geological and environmental themes most characteristic of the Sesia Val Grande, such as: pink marble, the Sesia supervolcano, the contact between the deep crust and the mantle, and the effects of climate change at high altitudes.
Work placements and internships
The Geopark organises work experience and internship programmes aimed at secondary school and university students, as well as aspiring nature and environmental guides, as part of its initiatives to protect and promote the area’s geological heritage.
The programmes on offer are designed to align with students’ fields of study and provide the opportunity to play an active role in research, outreach and heritage management projects.
The experiences gained may also form the basis for theses or final projects.
