International Geodiversity Day 2026

Rome, 6 October 2026 – The Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Global Geopark took part remotely in the symposium ‘Geoparks, Parks, Territories, Communities’, organised in Rome by the Italian Society of Environmental Geology (SIGEA), in collaboration with the Italian Federation of Associations and Clubs for UNESCO and the Italian Geographical Society.

The meeting provided an important opportunity to present the Geopark and the activities carried out in the area, with particular reference to geotourism, public outreach, training and education, highlighting the value of geodiversity as a means of understanding and promoting the area.

During the meeting, the importance of collaboration with local stakeholders was also emphasised; this is a key element in developing joint initiatives to promote the geological, natural and cultural heritage, and in strengthening the bond between the Geopark, the community and the local area.

The event also provided an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the regional UNESCO Federations and Clubs, with a view to exploring future forms of collaboration in the fieldsof education, public outreach and the promotion of a culture of geodiversity.

The initiative is therefore part of the Sesia Val Grande UNESCO Global Geopark’s commitment to networking, sharing experiences and creating new opportunities for collaboration, so that knowledge of geodiversity can increasingly become a shared heritage and a tool for community development.
