5 August 2018: Hike to Alpe Faller, towards the Walser ‘little gate’
On Sunday 5 August, the regular excursions organised for this summer by the Sesia Val Grande Geopark Association will begin, in collaboration with the local councils in whose areas the events take place, and accompanied by hiking guides as well as expert scholars.
The first outing is scheduled to take place in Alagna; it is of medium difficulty and will feature the botanist Mario Soster, as well as being sponsored by the Municipality of Alagna.
The meeting point is at 8.30 am at the car park in Wold, where you’ll take the shuttle bus (cost: €2.50) to the Acqua Bianca car park at 1,495 m, from where the hike begins towards Colle del Turlo. You’ll pass the Brunnenwasser Waterfall, then the Testanera stream, and continue along the hairpin bends of the military road. You’ll pass by the Im Mittlenteil and In d’Ekku mountain pastures and reach Alpe Faller at 1,984 metres, the destination of the hike, where you’ll stop for a packed lunch.
The route runs through the Alta Valsesia Nature Park, passing through larch forests and alpine pastures along a section of the road leading to Colle del Turlo, a historic passageway to the Anzasca Valley, much used for both trade and migration, and referred to by the Walser people in the 14th century as “Ds’ Turlji”, meaning “Little Gate” connecting the valleys. The original path was converted by the Alpine troops in the 1930s into a mule track to facilitate the transport of light artillery.
On the return journey, expected around 5 pm, the “Montagna di Luce” restaurant in the hamlet of Pedemonte, on the outskirts of Alagna, will offer participants a snack made with its own produce.
We recommend hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, long trousers, a hat and sun cream.
The programme is subject to change depending on weather conditions.
Contribution for the day: €12 (€10 for members), €8 (8–14 years), free for children under 8.
Booking is compulsory. For information and to book (by 6.00 pm on 4 August): 347 4474021 -info@supervulcano.it-www.supervulcano.it
