IESO 2026: the Sesia Val Grande Geopark welcomes participants to the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad

From 20 to 27 August 2026, Piedmont hosted the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), a major international event dedicated to Earth Sciences, which brought together over 160 students and more than 120 mentors and observers from 41 countries.

During the field activities, participants also had the opportunity to learn about the Sesia Val Grande Geopark through a visit to its headquarters in Vogogna and to the Cava Madre in Candoglia, one of the most significant sites in the area’s geological and cultural heritage.

The visit to the Cava Madre provided an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the history of this ancient quarry and the various stages involved in the processing and extraction of Candoglia marble. Through the tour of the museum and the quarry, participants were also able to learn about the complex organisation of the marble’s transport to Milan, linked to the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo.

The experience provided an important opportunity to link geology with history, culture and the landscape, demonstrating how the Geopark’s geological heritage can also serve as a tool for learning and international exchange.

Taking part in IESO 2026 also provided an opportunity to introduce young people from all over the world to the unique features of the Sesia Val Grande Geopark, helping to showcase its extraordinary geodiversity and cultural heritage.
