Stories of Stone in Beura

The nature trail runs through the municipality of Beura and is dedicated to the centuries-old history that has linked the people of these mountains to the use of stone. Roads, mule tracks, walls, supports, everyday tools, and buildings – both rustic and stately – were all constructed from local stone. Known commercially as ‘beola’, this stone has been the building material par excellence since ancient times and is still quarried today in the Beura area in three different varieties, which are particularly prized as cladding material.

In about an hour, not including stops, you can reach the end of the route, which has an elevation gain of 279 m and is easy to follow, although there are a few steep sections. The route, marked by 11 information panels, starts at Beura Town Hall, passes through the village and climbs along the paved and well-signposted mule track leading to Bissoggio. The starting point can also be reached by train on the FS Milan–Domodossola line.
