Vocca Island 1

The geological site, consisting of an outcrop beneath the bridge over the Gavala stream, features a layer of rock with light grey and rust-red bands: this is pre-existing crustal material that was engulfed by the gabbroic intrusion.

The original composition of this rock was altered by intense heating, which caused it to melt. As the molten material moved away from the hottest area, it left behind a dense gneiss, composed of minerals such as the abundant reddish-brown garnet, white feldspar and smaller quantities of quartz and sillimanite.
