Plot:
Three people are walking through a wood at dusk. A biologist, a photographer and a tourist. The wolf has returned to the Alps and they find themselves, each in their own way, having to come to terms with this new coexistence. The three of them scan the natural world; their ears pick up sounds and sense presences. A strange rendezvous at high altitude. And they talk – about themselves, about the wolf. As if, through their lives, they could encounter the wolf; as if, through the wolf, they could come to know themselves. It is night, and they stop at a spot that might be a good place to spot the wolf. The three have different feelings; they are an echo of their lives, sensations shaped by the experiences that have moulded them. Whether these are real, concrete experiences, or the product of an imagination fuelled by superstition and unconscious fear. Fear. Of the dark forest. Fear of a sound, a rustle. Fear of what I cannot see, of what I do not know. Fear of that stranger, of that which is different from me. Be it wolf or man. As the night deepens, the place grows oppressive; the forest dominates, seeping into our souls. We speak, we fall silent, we observe. And we feel, like a divine hand, the forest’s gaze upon us. A thought creeps in: they are close, terribly close. The suggestion takes shape, materialises. The forest becomes a dramatic, carnivorous theatre. Violent and cruel. To kill desire, the savage, the other, in order to dominate ourselves. But nothing is real; what happens is nothing but fiction, theatre within theatre. What remains in the end is a question: what future awaits us?
