The Sesia Supervolcano – a geological excursion
On Saturday 16 September 2023, thanks to the visit to Valsesia by Prof. Silvano Sinigoi, the discoverer of the ‘Sesia supervolcano’, an excursion is being organised along the River Sesia, from Balmuccia to the Prato Sesia area, to view and learn about the rocks of the supervolcano’s feed conduit, from the base up to those formed by the caldera explosion. A downhill journey along the river for around 30 km, yet one that is effectively an ascent into the volcano’s interior, from the base – with its denser rocks – up to the summit. A history dating back some 300 million years, as evidenced by the outcrops visible along the River Sesia.
The excursion lasts a day and involves travelling by car and walking for parts of the route. The meeting point is at the Balmuccia Municipal Theatre, where Prof. Sinigoi will present the research that led to the discovery of the volcano and explain what we will be able to see. We will also be accompanied by Alessandra Maffeo, a nature guide and guide for the Sesia Val Grande Geopark.
