The warp and weft threads

In line with this year’s theme, ‘On the Thread of Memories’, the Archaeological Museum and the Granite Ecomuseum, in collaboration with Mergozzo Town Council and the Archaeological Group, are organising a new event which, playing on the dual meaning of the word ‘thread’, offers an in-depth look at traditional spinning and weaving techniques:

Antica Latteria, Vicolo XI, 11

•The Warp and Weft • A workshop on the use of the traditional loom, led by Maria Vittoria Maulini, spinner, weaver and felt-maker, who will share her experience, gained over years of working on her family’s farm in Armeno, whilst also giving a practical demonstration of the entire wool production cycle, from sheep rearing through to the finished product – whether spun, woven or felted.

• In the spirit of tradition: the ginostri • A talk by Emanuele Villa on the Mergozzo custom of decorating ritual trees for the patron saint’s feast day and other similar traditions; followed by accounts from residents of Mergozzo.

Thursday 17 August • 9.00 pm

Parish Church of the Assumption

• Through the ages: the parish church of Mergozzo • A talk by Gian Vittorio Moro on the origins of the parish church of the Assumption, to mark the patron saint’s day.

Thursday 24 August • 9.00 pm

Old Dairy

• The common thread of writing • Lecture by Ferdinanda Cremascoli: reflections on the origins of alphabetic writing and a comparison of various writing systems.

The event forms part of the network-wide programme ‘La pietra racconta’, developed in collaboration with the Granum Museum and Baveno Town Council, which has received funding from the VCO Community Foundation.
