Giavine Tower
The Torre delle Giavine is a massive gneiss spire, 90 metres high from base to summit.
The site’s distinctive shape is linked to its origin. In fact, several factors have contributed to the formation of the Torre delle Giavine: the fractures running through the bedrock, the glacial shaping of the slopes and the subsequent shaping by watercourses, andthe resultingslope instability. A deep gravitational slope deformation (DGPV) – a massive landslide – affects the entire slope from Piano di Campo Alto down to the valley floor. This is due to the decompression of the slope following the last glacial expansion.
As well as being representative of the movement affecting the slope and the various processes that led to its formation, the geosite is an excellent example of how geomorphological interest complements other aspects that enhance its value: cultural ( the first ascent of the summit has now gone down in history), scenic ( the Torre is the symbol of Boccioleto and the Val Sermenza) and sporting ( it is a well-known climbing site, sought after for its sheer verticality and grandeur).
