San Lorenzo Museum Complex in Kreas
The San Lorenzo Museum Complex in Kreas is the first tangible realisation of the wider Kreas Mining Park project, which is set to become a key centre for the promotion of the Alps’ geological and mining heritage. This initiative not only promotes cultural and sustainable tourism in Valsesia, but also serves as an educational and scientific outreach tool, aimed at schools, families, and enthusiasts of geology and local history.
The old San Lorenzo Factory was once used to process gold extracted from the mine. The redevelopment of the San Lorenzo Factory allows visitors to see how the stone was crushed in preparation for the final extraction of the gold.
The restored factory now houses a museum featuring a high-tech, immersive and educational exhibition. It is home to original machinery from the 18th century, including the historic gold-milling wheels, making it unique in Europe.
