The Pizzo Stagno landslide

The Pizzo Stagno landslide is a geological site that enables us to interpret the geomorphological and vegetation dynamics associated with the landslide phenomenon, thereby revealing the evolutionary stages of the landscape.

Here, in fact, both the detachment zone of the landslide – which formed at the interface between different rock types – and the rock material accumulated within the landslide mass in the bed of the Rio Stagno are clearly visible. The debris was subsequently transported by the flowing water, gravity and avalanches, resulting in the fan-shaped debris deposit clearly visible further downstream.

Looking then at the foot of the slope affected by the landslide, the vegetation on the right-hand side appears disturbed and relatively young, indicating that, under certain conditions, it is still affected by debris flows and/or avalanches; the left-hand sector, on the other hand, is characterised by less disturbed and older vegetation, suggesting that it is currently relatively stable.
