The Hills of Boca

In the Boca hills, volcanic rocks are exposed; these are rocks formed by volcanic events such as lava flows and explosive eruptions. The volcanic rocks found here are mainly tuffs ( formed by the accumulation of ash, lapilli and pyroclastic flows), consisting of glass and varying amounts of crystals. The rapid cooling of the magma prevented it from fully crystallising.

The presence of volcanic rock makes the soil unique to this area and well-suited to vine cultivation, to the extent that the wine produced here takes its name from the place name ‘Boca’. The presence of volcanic rock is, in fact, strongly correlated with the wine’s acidity. The soil is of limited depth; rock outcrops at the surface, whilst the organic matter is limited and bound to the rock. The sand and clay found in the soil derive from the weathering of the rock’s constituents.
