The Viggiona–Trarego Geological Trail
The geological trail follows an existing path that is already marked on the hiking maps published by the Municipality of Trarego Viggiona. It starts in the village of Viggiona, at the church square, and from there continues along the path marked as R42 on the hiking map to the summit of Mount Carza, from where it descends via path R40 to the village of Trarego (Cheglio).
This is a trail of geological and geomorphological interest where visitors can observe rocks belonging to the Laghi Series and landforms resulting from glacial, fluvial and gravitational processes.
The rocks that outcrop here form part of a vast geological area known as the ‘Massiccio dei Laghi’, which largely represents a fragment of the deepest part of an ancient mountain range, brought to the surface by tectonic movements that have been at work for millions of years. These same rocks were shaped by watercourses and by the glacier that existed between one million years ago and around 20,000 years ago, as evidenced by the presence of terraces and glacial deposits, erratic boulders and valleys with a U-shaped cross-section, typical of glacial action.
There are no information boards along the trail, but a short guide is available: the printed version can be found at the tourist information office and the Tactile Museum of Natural Sciences in Trarego, as well as at the tourist information office in Cannobio.
